Camino Finisterre
Santiago to Finisterre
The End of the World
Self-Guided
The Camino Finisterre (or Fisterra) is a stunning 121Km extension of the Camino de Santiago, leading west from Santiago de Compostela to the dramatic Atlantic coastline at Cape Finisterre. Often considered the spiritual end of the Camino, this final journey invites pilgrims to continue beyond Santiago toward the sea — where many choose to pause, reflect, or even take a symbolic swim in the ocean.
Long before it became linked with Christianity, this path was a sacred pagan route. Ancient pilgrims walked to what was believed to be the edge of the known world — the place where the sun died each night. Cape Fisterra, on the rugged Costa da Morte (“Coast of Death”), was home to powerful legends, rituals, and the mystical Ara Solis: an altar dedicated to the setting sun. It remains a place of natural beauty, mystery, and quiet symbolism.

"I was looking around at different self-guided camino companies as I was a bit unsure of doing this completely on my own as a solo female. In my early communications with Ben, I knew I had made the right choice! He gave me great tips & advice before the trip and I felt super supported from the get-go."

ITINERARY

Arrive in Santiago de Compostela, the sacred city where your Camino likely ended — and now begins again. Spend time exploring the historic old town, visiting the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago, and soaking up the atmosphere of pilgrims arriving from across Europe. Take a moment at the Praza do Obradoiro, where journeys converge in shared celebration. This evening, enjoy local Galician cuisine and rest in preparation for the peaceful walk to the coast.
Day 1: Arrive in Santiago de Compostela
Step away from the bustle of the city and return to nature. The path leads through quiet forested tracks, passing eucalyptus groves, farmsteads, and tiny chapels as you descend gently into the Tambre River valley. Cross the stunning medieval bridge at Ponte Maceira, often described as one of the most beautiful in Galicia. Today’s terrain is soft underfoot, with a few rolling hills and long shaded sections — a calm, grounding start to your walk to the sea.
Day 2: Santiago to Ponte Maceira (17km)
Climb steadily out of the valley along forest paths and country lanes, surrounded by wide farmland and traditional stone-built hamlets. Pass through Negreira, the largest town before the coast, with cafés and pilgrim landmarks, then continue through cornfields, pine forest, and small ridges toward the village of Santa Mariña. The terrain rises gently throughout the day, with quiet trails offering expansive views over the Galician countryside.
Day 3: Ponte Maceira to Santa Mariña (20km)
Today’s path weaves through one of the most rural and contemplative stretches of the Finisterre Camino. Walk past ancient granaries (hórreos), bubbling streams, and hillside villages seemingly untouched by time. The trail follows undulating terrain, with occasional ascents through shaded pine forest and open meadows. Arrive in Olveiroa, a rustic village nestled near the Xallas River, where simple stone houses and traditional architecture offer a warm welcome.
Day 4: Santa Mariña to Olveiroa (22km)
Leave the inland hills behind as the Camino winds toward the Atlantic. This stage is among the most scenic, with breathtaking views across the Costa da Morte as you descend toward the coast. The terrain shifts from highland trails to coastal descent, with wide open vistas over the estuaries below. Enter Cee, a seaside town with cafés, beaches, and a vibrant local atmosphere — your first taste of the sea on this journey.
Day 5: Olveiroa to Cee (19km)
Follow the coastline from Cee to Finisterre, where the land meets the sea at the symbolic “End of the World.” Walk past sandy coves and small fishing villages before climbing the final stretch to the Cape Finisterre Lighthouse, perched above crashing waves. Take time to visit the Km 0 marker and reflect on your journey so far. Terrain is varied — a mix of paved waterfront paths and gentle ascents — leading to one of the most iconic destinations on the Camino.
Day 6: Cee to Finisterre (16km)
Today’s walk follows a quiet and scenic inland route as you make your way from Finisterre to the coastal village of Muxía, considered by many the true spiritual end of the Camino. The path winds through rural farmland, forested trails and the peaceful hamlet of Lires before returning to the Atlantic coast. Your journey ends at the dramatic headland of Muxía, home to the legendary Santuario da Virxe da Barca and powerful views over the crashing waves of the Costa da Morte.
Day 7: Finisterre to Muxía (29km)
Enjoy a quiet morning in Muxía. Watch the waves, revisit the shrine, or simply linger in the village cafés. Many pilgrims choose to stay longer here or begin their journey home from this peaceful coastal town.
To return to Santiago, you can take a direct bus operated by Monbus, with tickets available online or at the local bus stop. For a more scenic option, consider travelling via Finisterre, connecting through Cee, where additional buses run to Santiago de Compostela throughout the day.
Day 9: Depart Muxía
